How Jesus Helps us Overcome Temptations
How Jesus Helps Us Overcome Temptations

Hebrews 2:18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour [help] them that are tempted.
Jesus in His humanity was tested and tempted many times:
- At the beginning of His ministry Satan tempted Jesus in a similar manner to that of Eve. Matthew 4
- He faced the hardships of life.
- He was often tempted by the Jews with ensnaring questions.
- He was deserted by many of His followers and even by His disciples.
- He faced illegal trials, mockery, whip lashing, and crucifixion without giving in to the temptations to quit.
- In all this Jesus never sinned.
Jesus helps us when we are tested and tempted.
- By His example – We see from the gospels how Jesus handled testing and temptations: Three methods were scripture, prayer, and community. Jesus quoted scripture to the Devil. Jesus often spent much time in prayer before facing the crowds. He prayed in the garden before facing the illegal courts and crucifixion. Jesus had a community of believers that He loved, and they loved Him.
- By His death and resurrection, He delivered us from the power of sin and death. We are no longer in bondage to sin (Hebrews 2:15, Romans 6).
- Because Jesus is our merciful and faithful High Priest (Hebrews 2:17).
- Because Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit. 1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
1 With joy we meditate the grace
of our High Priest above;
his heart is made of tenderness,
and ever yearns with love.
2 Touched with a sympathy within,
he knows our feeble frame;
he knows what sore temptations mean
for he has felt the same.
3 He in the days of feeble flesh
poured out his cries and tears;
and, in his measure, feels afresh
what every member bears.
4 He'll never quench the smoking flax,
but raise it to a flame;
the bruisèd reed he never breaks,
nor scorns the meanest name.
5 Then let our humble faith address
his mercy and his power:
we shall obtain delivering grace
in every needful hour. -Isaac Watts
