Path to Spiritual Maturity

The Christian life is sometimes more like an obstacle course than a smooth path. One of the obstacles we face is the shortcomings of others. How can God use other people’s shortcomings to help you mature?

The Bible shows that God can use other people’s shortcomings to give us the opportunity to manifest the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Their shortcomings mature us by teaching us patience, humility, forgiveness, discernment, love, and dependence on Him. Their weaknesses may expose areas where we still need growth, and God can use those difficult interactions to shape Christlike character in us.Here are some bible passages that connect well with that idea:

  • Romans 5:3–4 — “...tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope.” -- Other people’s flaws can become a kind of “tribulation” that develops patience and proven character.
  • James 1:2–4 — “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.” -- Difficult relationships can test faith and help us become “perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
  • Proverbs 27:17 — “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” -- Even friction with others can sharpen us spiritually and emotionally.
  • Ephesians 4:2 — “With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love.” -- Other people’s shortcomings give us opportunities to practice humility, gentleness, and loving endurance.
  • Colossians 3:13 — “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another...” -- God uses imperfect people to teach us forgiveness, just as Christ forgave us.
  • Matthew 7:3–5 — Jesus warns about focusing on the “mote” in another person’s eye while ignoring the “beam” in our own. -- Others’ shortcomings can remind us to examine ourselves first.
  • Genesis 50:20 — “But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good...” -- Joseph’s story shows that God can use even people’s wrong actions to accomplish growth, wisdom, and good purposes.

God can use other people’s shortcomings as a tool for spiritual maturity by teaching us to respond with patience instead of anger, forgiveness instead of bitterness, humility instead of pride, and love instead of judgment. The Scriptues teach that trials develop patience and experience, that believers are to forbear and forgive one another, and that God can turn even painful situations for good.
