Running for the Prize
RUNNING FOR THE PRIZE

Philippians 3:13-14 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Running coaches often teach the runners not to look back. Eyes need to be fixed on the goal. Looking back can slow the runner down. Here Paul is teaching that dwelling on the past—whether past failures, regrets, or even past successes—can keep you from fully following God in the present.
Looking forward means staying focused on the life and purpose God is calling you to now. Paul compares it to a runner fixing their eyes on the finish line: if you keep turning back, you lose momentum and direction. The “goal” is deeper faithfulness and ultimately living a life pleasing to Christ.
So, practically, this passage encourages you to:
- Let go of past sins and failures that you have repented of instead of being trapped by guilt.
- Let go of the offenses of others knowing that holding on to anger and bitterness can destroy your future.
- Avoid living in past victories as if growth is finished.
- Keep your attention on Christ and the future He has for you.
- Continue growing with purpose, discipline, and hope.

My past does not need to determine my future!
