Working people make our nation prosperous. They contribute to the well-being of all of us. Labor Day is a holiday in which we honor the contributions, achievements, and sacrifices of working people. Thank you.

Work is a Necessity

God created and designed us to work. When we work, we contribute to our own well-being and the well-being of others. One of the hinderances in building the Jamestown Colony of 1607 was that many English Gentleman were unaccustomed to labor. When they arrived in Virginia much labor was needed, but they refused to work. Two-thirds of the colony died within the year.

Adam was the first worker.

Genesis 2:15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

God’s first command to man implied WORK.

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

After Adam sinned, he had to work even harder.

Genesis 3:18-19 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Because we are fallen people in a fallen world everything tends on its own to go from order to disorder and from clean to dirty, and from new to old and worn out, etc. Cleanliness and order take work. It does not just happen. Many of us have at least three jobs: Our paid job, Our family, and Our church. All three tend to move towards uncleanliness and disorder if we refuse to work.

1 Corinthians 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
