Proverbs 8:33-35 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

City elders, judges, and teachers often gathered at the city gates. People got their news and socialized and made purchases at the gates. Ezra read from the law at the Water Gate. People gathered at the Temple gates for worship. Jesus and the Disciples taught at the Temple.

Hebrew poetry often emphasizes an idea by repetition. “Watching daily at my gates” and “waiting at the posts of my doors” are phrases used in this way. We see the learner getting closer and closer. Verses 34 and 35 are a beatitude of blessing and favor to the person who seeks God early. We need to be of those who desire to hear from God as we study His Word daily. A ‘disciple indeed’ remains attentive for instruction (John 8:31-32). This could apply to devotions at home or attentiveness at church.

Jesus taught at the Temple. People came early to hear Him: Luke 21:37-38 And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives. And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him. -- See also John 8:2. Also, the Apostles would teach at the Temple early in the morning, and people would gather to hear them teach (Acts 5:2).

Our spirit, soul, and mind require daily renewal. 2 Corinthians 4:16 “… the inward man is renewed day by day.” This doesn’t happen without watching and waiting before God as we study His Word.

Some practical ideas: Take notes on sermons and Bible studies. At home, turn off the TV, and make your phone where you can’t hear notifications. Try to make it a quiet time with God and your Bible. Ask God to give you nuggets of gold in your reading. Keep a journal of your devotions. Don’t hurry. You will receive the blessing of the above beatitude!
