Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

In Romans 5 Paul uses the term ‘much more’ five times to make sure we know what Christ has done for us. The last time he used the phrase, he says, “But where sin bounded, grace did much more bound:” After glorying in all that Christ has done for us, in Paul’s logical thinking, he presents an argument that may come from opposers of grace. They might say, “OK then, let’s sin a whole bunch, so that we can experience God’s grace even more.” Paul answers this not with the law or rules, but with our identity – Who We Are.

We have been buried and raised with Christ. We identify with Him. We are to walk in newness of life. This occurred at the moment we got saved. We are in Christ, and He is in us. The writer of Hebrews quotes from Jeremiah 31, Hebrews 10:16-17 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

At salvation we were born-again of the Spirit of God. We received a new heart and the mind of Christ. We became a child of God. That is who we are.

When a person is sworn into public office their identity changes. People begin calling them by their title: President, governor, senator, congressman, mayor, etc. Now, the person may not feel immediately their identity. It may take weeks or even years to fully understand and know their true identity; however, the moment they are sworn in, that is their identity.

Behavior follows belief. Ignorance of who we are leads to unbelief, sinful thinking, and sin. By knowing who we are in Christ and what we have in Christ we can forsake sin and live for God. It starts with knowing our identity. Who are you? Are you a child of the King?

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
