WHAT IS DISCRETION?
WHAT IS DISCRETION?
Proverbs 2:10-13 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee , understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
Discretion keeps us on the right path. Discretion saves us from injury or destruction. It defends us from evil. It is a character trait that is most needed .
What is Discretion? It is an element of wisdom based on knowledge that enables a person to judge critically of what is correct and proper. It uses caution and good judgment. It looks for the best course of conduct to do the right thing and avoid danger. It evaluates probable consequences. It is for us to evaluate our own motivations, desires, and conduct.
Examples of Indiscretion:
- Lot lacked discretion in moving his family to Sodom. Lot’s lack of discretion even began earlier in the way he separated from his uncle Abraham. He coveted the best land for himself.
- David lacked discretion in having Bathsheba brought up to his room.
- Amnon lacked discretion by listening to his cousin Jonadab. After following Jonadab’s advice, Amnon ended up raping his half-sister Tamar.
- Rehoboam lacked discretion by listening to unwise advice. He then spoke to the leaders of the ten northern tribes of Israel in a threatening manner. The country was split into two kingdoms.
Examples of Discretion:
- David showed discretion by not killing King Saul on the two occasions he could have easily done so.
- Abigail showed discretion in being a peacemaker by providing for David and his men. She appeased David’s wrath against her wicked husband.
- Queen Esther showed discretion in how she handled the grave situation with King Ahasuerus and Hamon. The welfare of the Jews was at stake.
