Never Man Spake Like This Man

Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. John 7:45-46

I’m sure these officers had heard many, many speeches in their lifetime as they protected the Sanhedrin and the Temple. They may have heard orations from the high priest. Many of the great doctors of the law taught in Jerusalem, including Gamaliel (Apostle Paul’s teacher).

The Pharisees and priests had sent the officers to take Jesus by force. They went to do it; however, when they arrived to take Jesus, even by force, if necessary; they listened to Him speak.  When questioned, they didn’t make any excuses for not arresting Jesus. Jesus’ words affected them.

Even though these men may not have been believers, they spoke more truth than they knew. In all eternity no man ever spake like Jesus. Jesus spoke creation into existence (Genesis 1). He is called “The Word.” God used Moses to give us the books of the law, David to give us hymns and prayers, Solomon to give us wisdom; but none compared to Jesus Christ. On the Mount of Transfiguration Peter made the mistake of lifting Moses and Elijah to equality with Jesus.

Hebrews 1:1-3 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Matthew 7:29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Do Jesus’ words affect you? Never man spake like Jesus! Let’s listen to Him!
