ABUNDANT GRACE

Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans and his other letters emphasized mercy and grace. Some might accuse Paul of teaching that once a person gets saved, they could live however they want. He preached and taught salvation by faith alone and by grace alone.  Paul realizes that what he has been teaching in the earlier chapters of Romans might lead to people thinking that, so that is why Paul wrote chapter 6.

Paul is teaching here that God’s grace is so much more powerful than the power that sin once had over us. When we got saved, God saves us from the penalty and the power of sin. We died to sin’s power. We have a new impowered life with Christ.

Romans 5:20b-21 … But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

At one time in our life sin reigned. We lived under its power and authority. We no longer live under its power and authority. A greater authority reigns over us: God and His free grace. Under God’s reign He abundantly gives us everything we need to ward off the devil and defeat sin. We do not have to obey sinful lusts or the devil. God has already delivered us from sin’s power: Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Read Romans 6:1-2 a few times replacing the word ‘we’ with ‘I’ and the word ‘sin’ with your besetting sin or sinful habit. You must no longer allow that sin to have dominion over you. Reckon yourself dead to it (Rom. 6:11). Remember and realize the power that is in the abundant grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Grace abounds much more than sin ever abounded.

1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
