Noah Offers an Acceptable Sacrifice

And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; Genesis 8:20-21a

After Noah and his family left the ark, Noah built an altar and offered some of the clean animals to the Lord. Noah appreciated all that God had done in sparing the lives of his family and himself. He also offered the sacrifice as an atonement for the sins of his family and himself. We know that God had accepted the sacrifice, because we are told that “the Lord smelled a sweet savour.”

The sacrifice atoned for the sins of Noah and his family. “Atone” means “to cover over.” Just as Noah had covered the ark with pitch within and without, so God covered Noah’s sins until Jesus Christ would permanently remove them.

God the Father accepted Jesus’ death on the cross as a sacrifice for our sin. He showed that acceptance by raising Christ from the dead three days later. Through His death on the cross, Jesus atones for our sins; however, He does not just cover our sins. He removes them . Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood.

Noah, and later the Levitical priests, were only allowed to offer ceremonially clean animals that had no blemish. Jesus had no blemish. He had never sinned. He was perfectly righteous. We have sinned. We are blemished. We are sinners. Jesus bore our sins on the cross and gave His righteousness to us if we believe on Him. Believers stand before God in the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

We no longer need to build altars and offer animal sacrifices to God. The only requirement we have is to believe on Jesus Christ. He is our Atonement.

Do you believe?

John 1:11-12 He [JESUS] came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
