DELIVERED FROM DARKNESS

Delivered from Darkness

Colossians 1:12-14 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:


As we read the Old Testament, we see several incidents of individuals or groups of people being rescued: God delivered Noah and his family; Abraham rescued Lot and his family; Joseph is delivered from prison; God delivers the Israelites from slavery in Egypt; David rescued his family from the Amalekites; and God brings His people back from captivity in Babylon. Deliverance brought joy and freedom to those who had been captives.


At one time darkness had power over us. This darkness represents the power of our own lusts that we were captive to. It also represents our walk in the world under the power of the devil (Ephesians 2:1-3). We did not have the power within ourselves to free ourselves from this darkness. Only the Gospel of Christ could free us from this darkness.


We see these truths from Colossians in the Apostle Paul’s commission to preach the Gospel: Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.


If the darkness of the world begins to envelop you, then rebuke it and reckon yourself as a child of light. We live in a dark world, but we are no longer captive to this world nor its darkness.


  • John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
  • Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
  • 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.


As it doesn’t make sense for a person to return to his captivity, so it doesn’t make sense for a child of the light to walk in darkness. Let’s walk in fellowship with the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ!
