JESUS OFFERS REST

JESUS OFFERS REST TO THE HEAVY-LADEN SOUL

Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

What can make our soul heavy laden?

  • Feelings of guilt and shame regarding our sins
  • Thoughts of life as meaningless; Just going through the motions
  • Trials and afflictions
  • Worry about the future

How does a heavy-laden soul affect us as a person?

  • We lose our hope and joy.
  • Our spirit is quenched.
  • Our relationships with God and others are hindered.
  • We become lethargic. We do not feel like doing anything.
  • We become discouraged and depressed.
  • We isolate ourselves even more.

Jesus sees the toil and sorrow that weighs on every soul. He is not fooled by outward appearance. He can see straight into the soul. He also has a remedy prepared for each person who comes to Him. He is our Great Physician; He is the Balm in Gilead. Jer. 8:22

What hinders people from coming to Jesus for rest?

Pride – Even when we are at our worst, we have a fix-it-yourself attitude. We think we can fix it without humbling ourselves and coming to Jesus. After Matthew, the publican, began following Jesus, many of his friends came to Jesus. The Pharisees criticized Jesus. Jesus responded to them by saying, they that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. Matthew 9:12. Jesus would not help those Pharisees who considered themselves “whole.” But Jesus delights in helping those who come to Him for forgiveness and healing, who bring their burdens and worries [RC1]   to Him.

Hebrews 4:15-16 For we have not an high priest [Jesus] which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
