God’s Extended Hand of Mercy
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8
Because of the sin of Judah which included idolatry and desecration of the Sabbath day, God promised destruction and curses upon the people. These people were very wicked and vile and deserved the consequences of their sin. But at the same time God extends his hand of mercy and grace to those who would trust in Him rather than their human leaders and idols. He gives them a second chance. Later in this chapter Jeremiah preaches of God’s mercy to those who would hallow the Sabbath day. Most reject God’s extended hand which offers mercy and blessing to the nation of Judah.
Jeremiah contrasts the consequences of trusting in human strength versus relying on God. The blessing is upon those who place their faith and confidence in God. The “tree planted by the water” suggests continual nourishment, resilience, and fruitfulness. As we face temptations and adversity those who trust in God remain strong, secure, and productive.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
We are to examine where we place our trust. God extends His hand of mercy to each of us, if we will look to Him in faith.
