Watch Ye, Stand Fast in the FAITH

Dr. J. C. Joiner

 2 0 1 7 … and having done all, to STAND.

(Eph 6:13)

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

(1 Co 16:13)

Watch ye This exhortation is given evidently in view of the dangers and temptations which confront God’s people. The word used here means, to keep awake, to be vigilant. This military metaphor is derived from the duty of those who are stationed as sentinels to guard a camp or to observe the movements of an enemy. The term is frequently used in the New Testament and the duty frequently commanded (Mat 24:41-42, 25:13; Mar 13:35; Luk 21:36; Acts 20:31; 1Thes 5:6; 2Tim 4:5). The application is that we are to be vigilant, against all evils of the world, the flesh, the devil. As to our local Church, we must watch for dissension, erroneous doctrines, disorder, false teachers, lest the enemies of the truth and of holiness should steal silently upon us. We are to watch with the same vigilance that is required of a sentinel who guards the troops, lest an enemy should come suddenly upon them and surprise the resting army.

Stand fast in the faith We must be firm in holding and defending the truths of the faith which was once delivered unto the saints (Jud 1:3). We must not yield to any foe, but stand up strong for truth, and adhere to our confidence in God and to the doctrines of the Gospel with unwavering constancy.  Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand (1Co 15:1).  We must be firm in maintaining what we believe about our God, and in holding to our personal confidence in God, notwithstanding all criticism of secular humanists, insinuations by the ungodly, the teachings of seducers, and the purveyors of false doctrines.

Quit you like men  The word, quit, occurs here only in the New Testament. Quit means to charge; to render one to be  brave; to show oneself as “a man’s man,” i.e., not cowardly, not timid, nor alarmed by the strength of enemies. The man of God is to be bold and brave, courageous and daring; a strong man that is not mean spirited, neither a wimp nor macho!

Be strong We must be secure, stable, steadfast, … strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might (Eph 6:10).
