The Angel Gabriel
Luke 1:30-33 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
What Gabriel did:
The angel Gabriel delivers messages from God twice to Daniel and twice in Luke, once to Zacharias and once to Mary. The last time Gabriel speaks to Daniel he tells him of the coming Messiah. That was 538 BC. There is no mention of Gabriel again until Luke tells us of his appearing to Zacharias in the Temple to give him the good news that he and Elizabeth were to have a son and name him John (Jehovah is Gracious). Six months later Gabriel announces the good news to Mary that she is going to have a son. He told her to name him Jesus (Jehovah is Saviour). Gabriel is not mentioned again in the Bible by name though he could have been one of the unnamed angels. It is significant that since Gabriel got to announce the coming Messiah to Daniel that he again got to announce the good news to Zacharias and Mary over 500 years later.
What Gabriel and angels do not do:
They do not preach and teach the gospel of Christ to sinners. Angels do not tell sinful human beings how to be saved. In the book of Acts we see two instances of angels involved in people getting saved, but Christians gave the message. An angel directed Philip to go to Gaza where he won an Ethiopian man to Christ. An angel spoke to Cornelius to send for Peter. Peter preached Christ to Cornelius and those in his house, and they got saved. We don’t see examples of angels preaching the gospel.
What we are to do:
God has commissioned those of us who have experienced the saving grace of God to preach and teach the gospel to the whole world. This is God’s perfect plan. What God commands us to do He enables us to do. The Christmas season gives us the opportunity to explain the true meaning of the birth of Christ. We can tell people why God became human flesh. (See Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8.)
1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
