Legalism? or True Holiness?

A legalist is the term frequently used by moderates and progressives to describe a separatist Baptist who is zealous for pure Bible doctrines and desire to maintain holy standards of living in this perverse generation. The popular “free-thinking” attitude of neo-evangelicals was expressed at a “Christian” rock concert called Greenbelt ‘83: “We don’t believe in a fundamentalist approach. We don’t set ground rules. Our teaching is non-directive. We want people to make their own choices.”  One who believes in rules and direction and the teaching of doctrine is called a Pharisee. Thus, “Pharisee” and “legalist” have been the unscriptural mind-set labels given to genuine Bible believers.

A correction is appropriate. The Pharisee’s error was not his love for the truth and his zeal for Bible righteousness. The Pharisee did not love the truth; he loved his tradition [Matt. 15:1-9].  If the Pharisee had loved the truth, he would have loved Jesus Christ [John 8:47]. The Pharisee did not love Bible righteousness; he loved his self-righteousness [Luke 18:9-14]. The Pharisee did not have a zeal for God; he had a zeal for his own false religion [Matt. 23:15].

To call a fundamental Bible believer who is saved by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, who loves the Word of God, who wants to obey the Lord in his daily walk, a “Pharisee,” or a ‘legalist” is evil and untrue slander!

Biblical grace teaches men to “deny ungodliness and worldly lusts.”

Contrast this culture’s hatred of biblical absolutes and separation with what the Bible declares is “true holiness.”  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men. Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world. Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee [Titus 2:11-15]. After all, our Lord linked “love” with rules keeping … If ye love me, keep my commandments [John 14:15].

Grace does not grant liberty or license to do as we please in fleshly pursuits. Biblical grace teaches men to “deny ungodliness and worldly lusts.” Any definition of grace which does not produce separation from moral license and does not insist on the obligation to faithful service, is unscriptural.
