Joy Unspeakable

1 Peter 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him [Jesus Christ] not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

This holiday season can be a sad and depressing time for many people even if they are participating in the holidays. If you are sad and depressed, you need the joy of the Lord! Let us remember that it is God’s UNSPEAKABLE gift that gives us UNSPEAKABLE joy!                        2 Corinthians 9:15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. Joy is not something we can work up. Joy cannot be manufactured. It is different from happiness. Our happiness can be affected by happenstance. The circumstances of life can affect our happiness, but not our joy. Joy is a Fruit of the Spirit.

Joy is a fruit and emotion that Christians must have to properly live for God and overcome sin and temptation. Ezra helps us understand a little more about how we get joy and the necessity of having joy.

Nehemiah 8:10b for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

If we do not have the joy of the Lord in our life, we will be weak! We will not be able to overcome sin. We will not be the testimony for God we should be. We will also be miserable. We must not be content with not having joy. Every Christian is duty bound to have this joy.

Ezra’s statement, the joy of the LORD is your strength, came at the conclusion of much preaching and expounding of the Word of God. The Word of God effectually worked (1 Thess. 2:13) in the people to produce joy! Then the joy of the LORD gave them strength to obey the truths that they had learned from Ezra and the other teachers.

Disobedience to God will take your joy away. If you have lost the joy of the LORD, then pray David’s prayer of repentance and ask God to restore unto you the joy of your salvation (Psalm 51).

  • Repent of sin and unbelief. If we are quenching the Spirit by our sin, the Spirit will not give us joy.
  • Ask God for His joy. Real joy only comes from God.
  • Spend quality time in the Word of God. Joy rests upon God’s promises.
  • Praise God and give Him thanks. (Negative thoughts and complaints come naturally. We must determine to take time to be thankful.)

Joy was Jesus’ strength also. Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
