Daily Bible Journal – 20120101

It is my purpose in this blog to journal through the Bible with the thought of RU students in mind, but also with the desire for myself to be daily washed in the Word. I have read the Bible many times, and I have written many things in a journal, but I have never planned or done anything to this extent. This is not a verse by verse commentary. I am simply pointing out key thoughts that I get from the chapters. I plan to write a simple introduction to each book of the Bible on the day we read the first chapter of the book. You are welcome to post comments or questions. Maybe God revealed something special to you in your devotions and journaling.

Proverbs 1:4-5 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

These Proverbs were written for all people including the simple (a person who may be weak in intellect), the young, the wise, and the man of understanding. I must beware of pride, thinking I know it all. We can all learn from others.

subtlety – fineness, refinement, cunning (Wow! God can take a person who does foolish things and is weak minded and refine them into His image!)

discretion – that discernment which enables a person to judge critically of what is correct and proper, united with caution (Often the young are spontaneous and act without thinking about consequences. God can give proper judgment to the young.)

We must continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

My thought for today: I need to continue to learn more about God and His work. I must submit to His leadership, so that I can learn to be a better leader.

Introduction to Genesis

Genesis was written be Moses. It was revealed to Moses by God. It is possible that Moses had some writings passed down to him from Joseph; but whether he did or not, God, the Holy Spirit, is the real author of all the books in the Bible. 2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. It is the first of five books that Moses wrote.

When I was sixteen years old I was going to a liberal church that was part of the National Counsel of Churches. My pastor told me that the first eleven chapters of Genesis were myth. He said that we could believe in evolution. I never went back to that church. Many today want to destroy Genesis, because they don’t want a personal God who will one day judge them. Jesus refers to verses in Genesis 1 and 2 regarding Adam and Eve as if they were true. Luke, Paul and Jude refer to Adam as the first man. If you believe that much of Genesis is myth, then it destroys the New Testament also. If you destroy the foundation the house will fall.

There are many scientists who believe in the literal interpretation of Genesis as Jesus did. You can visit their sites for further study:

Beware of the new science called Intelligent Design. It does give us some amunition against the evolutionists; however, they compromise by not talking about Jesus. They don’t demand a literal interpretation of Genesis. With their science there is no foundation for the truths of the Bible.

Genesis is the foundation for morals, ethics, sin, forgiveness, clothing, sex, marriage, family, individual-family-community worship, faith, doctrine of God, law and government, etc. God placed this book first for it is the foundation for how we are to believe and live.

The first prophecy of Jesus is in Genesis 3:15. He is the seed of the woman. He is also prophesied of in Genesis 49:10 as the Messiah (Shiloh).

When I read Genesis chapter one the following verses come to mind:

Psalms 19:1-2 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

We cannot see the end of the universe even with high powered telescopes. We cannot see some of the finest detail of cells and atoms even with the most powerful microscopes. The God who makes the hugest of things takes care of the details. I can trust my life to the God who takes care of the details.

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

My purpose for living is to please God. So many people today wonder what they are here for. People struggle with knowing the will of God. Whatever the will of God is, it falls under this, that we must please God. This must be our first desire.

We see the trinity in Genesis chapter 1: In verse 2 the Holy Spirit is mentioned. In verse 1:26a (And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:) God uses the term ‘us’ and creates man a three part being, as he is referred to later in Scriptures.

Man is created much higher than any other creature. There is no thought here that man developed from other creatures. We were created to have fellowship with God, as we were created in His image. As a Christian I am being made into the image of Christ. (Romans 8:29 and 2 Corinthians 3:18).

God set aside a special day for us to rest from our labors. Jesus said that this day was made for us. God made the day holy. It was to be used to worship God. This day also is fulfilled in Jesus being our rest. Matthew 11:28-29 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. And Hebrews 4.

The first man and woman lived in a paradise. In the future Jesus will bring paradise to earth during the millennium.

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil. There was evil in the universe before Adam and Eve, as Satan had rebelled against God. Adam and Eve were being tested as to whether they would obey God or not.

God gets pleasure out of my choosing to obey. God didn’t make me a puppet. God was good in creating man with the ability to reason and make choices. There is much evil in the world, but it cannot be blamed on God, who made all things good. As Christians God gives us everything we need to live in this evil world. We have the gifts and fruits of the Spirit. He equips us with his armor. Because of evil in the world I have opportunity to manifest the fruits of the Spirit.

In our culture today marriage doesn’t seem to be important. Over the centuries it can be shown how civilizations and cultures have collapsed because of permissive sexual behavior. God knew what He was doing, and He had our best interests in mind.
